New Hotel Next Step In Middlesbrough Regeneration By Jomast
PLANS accepted for a new town centre hotel in Middlesbrough will mark the next step for Jomast’s regeneration of the town.
Planning permission for an 80-room Premier Inn at Wilson Street heralds a new phase of regeneration in the town that will bring new visitors and cash into the local economy.
At a meeting in December Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Sub Committee for Property agreed to Jomast’s acquisition of the site, which will enable work to start on the £6.5m development in Spring 2016.
The hotel forms part of the wider Gurney Street Triangle development which features proposals for a luxury hotel, casino, restaurants and multi-storey car park, with the overall scheme estimated to be worth more than £30 million.
It is estimated the Premier Inn development will create around 40 new jobs, alongside additional local employment opportunities during the construction phase.
Welcoming the decision, Jomast owner and Managing Director Stuart Monk said: “We are looking forward to commencing the 80-bedroom Premier Inn development early in the New Year as the first phase of the Gurney House leisure scheme which includes a casino, a four star hotel, restaurants and banqueting/conference facilities as well as a new multi-story car park.
“Our Bedford Street scheme is now fully let with tenants commencing fit-out early in the new year and all units opening in the run-up to spring. All the expectations are that it will be a tremendous success story.
“Building on those schemes we are looking to work closely with the Council to redevelop a number of units on Albert Road where we have recently completed improvements to Sun Alliance House and the former Wilsons Courtyard.
“We have received planning permission in respect of 15-33 Albert Road and we are seeking to agree an early start date for commencement of works.
“We intend to create a new vision for this part of the town centre and bring in new businesses and office occupiers.”
Councillor Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration and chair of the Executive Sub Committee for Property, said: “This is a very important part of the town centre, and these proposals represent a unique opportunity to create a new and vibrant mixed-use quarter.
“It’s further evidence that Middlesbrough is changing, and embracing its future with vision and ambition.
“Throughout this process our focus has been on achieving the best value from any land sale, and I’m confident that the Premier Inn and the wider Gurney Street development will play an important role in the town’s ongoing transformation.”
