The Globe Stockton Moves One Step Closer as Planning is Passed
The first step in an ambitious vision to bring back The Globe Theatre has been achieved after Stockton Borough Council passed multimillion pound development plans submitted by property developer, Jomast.
The decision marks the beginning of a strategic joint partnership between Jomast and Stockton Borough Council that aims to deliver a major regeneration project in the heart of Stockton town centre and relaunch The Globe as one of the largest live entertainment and performance venues in the North East.
Plans passed by the Council include the preservation and restoration of the present external appearance and all major elements of the building as used in the past, extending the venue to allow for the upgrade and installation of new seating, bar, catering and washroom facilities and converting an adjacent vacant property into a modern bar and bistro. The internal layout will also be largely unchanged in order to maintain the existing space and architectural features.
The multimillion pound project is expected to play an integral part in the revival and future regeneration of Stockton High Street and significantly boost the local economy.
Jomast Managing Director, Stuart Monk, commented, “This is an extremely positive step forward for Jomast, Stockton Borough Council and also for the region. There is a substantial amount of work to be done in order to finalise and deliver our vision for The Globe and we are now working closely with key partner agencies in order to start moving this project forward.”
The Globe, located on Stockton High Street, was one of the region’s best known music venues during the 1950’s and 60’s and attracted major artists including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Buddy Holly and Cliff Richard. And, with planning permission now granted, The Globe could once again see the return of many top performance artists to Teesside.
Richard Poundford, Head of Regeneration and Economic Development at Stockton Borough Council added, “Proposals to redevelop the Globe Theatre will certainly be good news for Stockton as the former glory and success of the venue has been of interest to many people for a number of years. Its redevelopment would have a positive impact on surrounding businesses and the wider economic vibrancy of the Town Centre as a whole.
“It will integrate well with the live music scene already happening at a variety of levels at venues such as ARC, the Georgian Theatre, and Middlesbrough Town Hall, and events like Stockton’s annual fringe festival and Middlesbrough Music Live. It has a major presence and visibility as a landmark and forms a key part of our development plans.”
The Project is receiving massive support from members of the public as in less than three weeks, more than 700 people have given their backing on social networking site, Facebook.
